CONTRACEPTION, PLANNING A FAMILY AND INFERTILITY: OTHER HORMONAL METHODS-PROGESTOGEN-ONLY PILL AND DEPOT PROGESTERONE INJECTIONS
This contains only the progesterone component and in lesser dose than is used in the combined Pill. Although regarded as very safe medically it is less effective than the combined Pill, having a failure rate of 2 to 3 per 100 woman years, but since fertility effectively declines with age, women of 40 years and older are likely to be well protected. The big snag is that cycle control is poor and excessive, irregular or no bleeding may occur.
Depot progesterone injections-These are more effective than progestogen-only Pills and are given by injection once every 8 or 12 weeks. They are reserved for special situations such as waiting for the man’s semen to clear of sperm after a vasectomy; for older women with menstrual problems; and in some very hairy women. Once given they can not be removed; they may lead to problems with bleeding; and the return of fertility may be delayed after their use.
