FOOD ALLERGY: MANAGE YOUR DIET

When you first start on managing your diet, it is best to start by being very strict, avoiding troublesome foods and sticking to the guidelines of the diet you have been advised to follow. After a while, many people find that, as their wellbeing improves, their overall tolerance of foods improves as well and they can be less strict or even eat foods that previously upset them. Many people prescribed a rotation diet find after a while that they do not have to continue to rotate foods and that they can return to a more or less ordinary diet, avoiding only certain foods to which they are very highly sensitive.

Special diets are therefore not necessarily a life sentence. Follow them strictly at first and then ease off, to see how you go. You can always go back to the strict diet to get yourself well again if you find your symptoms creeping back. Find out for yourself what you can tolerate – eat a little of a problem food occasionally and see what amount of it you might be able to bear. Watch out for masked symptoms (feeling generally rotten, and having background symptoms again), which can return when you eat a problem food regularly.

You may have to get used to being very organised about your meals – taking food with you to work or school, speaking to restaurants or hosts in advance to make sure they cater for you. It pays to be assertive – most people are very helpful, provided they have enough information on what you need.
