FIRST AID AND HOME MEDICINE: FUNGAL INFECTIONS AND BANDAGES AND DRESSINGS

Athlete’s Foot and Other Fungal Infections

Bathing the site of athlete’s foot or other fungal infections in a solution of potassium permanganate will help cure it. Ask your pharmacist for advice on dosage.

You can react allergically to the fungus itself, and this can aggravate the symptoms. Removing the infection as above will relieve this.

Bandages and Dressings

Use pure cotton wool balls, cotton buds and dressings wherever possible if you are chemically sensitive, or have sensitive skin. Many brands of cotton wool are not 100 per cent pure cotton, but a cotton/viscose blend.

Use absorbent pure cotton lint for a padded dressing for a cut or wound. Secure with low allergen (hypoallergenic) dressing tape; Micropore or Dermicel tape are usually well tolerated.

Use pure cotton gauze bandages when you need a bandage. Avoid elasticated bandages unless you know you do not react to elastic or rubber.

For simple plasters, Boots Clear Washproof Plasters are well tolerated by people with sensitive skin, or allergies. Micropore, Elastoplast and Band Aid also make low-allergen (hypoallergenic) plasters.
