FIRST AID AND HOME MEDICINE FOR BOILS AND INFECTIONS AND BRUISING AND SPRAINS
Boils and Infections
For boils, or infected spots or scabs, a dressing of magnesium sulphate paste will help to bring out and ease the infection. First wash the area with cooled boiled water and cotton wool. Apply a covering layer of paste, and cover with a pure cotton dressing secured with low-allergy adhesive tape (Micropore or Dermicel).
A hot water bottle held on the site of infection, once covered with dressing, can also speed recovery by increasing blood flow to the infected area. See a doctor if infection persists.
If you are sensitive to rubber or plastics, use an old-fashioned ceramic hot water bottle. Search in attics, or junk shops, or see page 180 for manufacturer.
Bruising and Sprains
Apply an ice pack to bruises and sprains to reduce swelling. If you are sensitive to soft plastics, place ice cubes in a plastic bag and wrap it in a cloth or pillowcase to mask it. You could also use a bag of frozen vegetables wrapped in a cloth or pillowcase.
Witch Hazel is a natural plant extract that is astringent and eases bruising and swelling. It can cause sensitivity reactions, but if you tolerate it, it is very useful. Sniff it gently in the pharmacy before buying; if you feel unwell on inhaling, or strongly dislike the smell, do not use it. Apply liberally to a cloth and hold it to the site of bruises and sprains.
