INFERTILITY DUE TO ENDOMETRIOSIS
Infertility – defined as the inability to conceive a child after a year of having unprotected intercourse — is a common symptom of endometriosis.
It is thought that approximately 30% to 40% of women with endometriosis are infertile — compared with 15% of women in general. It is believed that endometriosis affects up to 40% of all women with infertility and that it is one of the most common causes of infertility in women over the age of 25.
However, at least 50% of infertile women with endometriosis do eventually conceive. Furthermore, for those women who do conceive, endometriosis should cause no problems with the pregnancy and subsequent delivery of a healthy baby, although some women may experience a worsening of their endometriosis during the first few months of their pregnancy.
The likelihood of conceiving appears to be related to the severity of the disease — the more severe the disease the lower the likelihood of pregnancy.
